EMMAUS PRATO COMMUNITY

Member organisation of Emmaus International since 1981.

The Emmaus Prato community is composed of seven smaller communities, scattered around the city of Prato. In the Castelnuovo community, 15 companions do traditional Emmaus community work: collecting, sorting, repairing and selling second-hand goods at low prices. In the Rose di Emmaus community, where there is a large second-hand goods shop and a woodwork workshop, people on rehabilitation programmes carry out similar work. The women of the Narnali community are involved in needlework and creative recycling projects. The Emmaus bookshop sells rare and collectable second-hand books, organises cultural evenings and funds educational projects. The Solidarity Boutique and Emmaus Oasis are two more second-hand goods shops, mostly managed by volunteers. The income generated by the Oasis is used to run a refuge for vulnerable women. Finally, in San Leonardo, a 12th century chapel, the community is supporting a social farming project.
