Emmaus group leaders in the Americas meet in Lima

A meeting of group leaders in the Americas was held at the start of July in Lima, Peru. Over one week, the leaders from the Emmaus groups in North and South America held discussions on specific, cross-cutting subjects addressed by three working groups: “Second-hand shops,” “Education” and “Social Work.” Their discussions focused on self-sufficiency, the Emmaus schools’ education system, gender equality, leadership, conflict resolution, and the resolutions adopted at the World Assembly 2022, among others.

The objectives established for this event were as follows:

  • Strengthening autonomy, the sense of belonging and commitment within the groups and the movement.
  • Bolstering the commitment and activities of groups and leaders in bringing about change and social transformation.

Following a week of plenary and small group sessions, with input from external speakers, several commitments emerged, such as the idea of integrating gender issues into the work of Emmaus groups and at national, regional and international meetings. Similarly, an idea was raised to create suitable areas within the groups to keep Abbé Pierre’s memory alive, as a constant source of inspiration in the groups’ day-to-day activities and their daily struggles.

Participants also mentioned the importance of supporting the “pivotal generations”, who bridge the gap between Emmaus’ historic companions and younger generations, so they can spread the movement’s values. They also underscored the need to make it easier for people interested in taking part in theme-based working groups to do so.

It was a productive and interactive week, where the younger generations were able to meet long-standing members. The “pivotal generation” played a key role in forging ties to safeguard our social and political heritage, whilst ensuring it moves with the times. This intense, emotionally-charged meeting strengthened ties between the groups in the Americas, guided by the values and words of Abbé Pierre.
