EMMAÜS RESISTENCIA joined Emmaus International in 1988.
The community is located in a predominantly working-class neighborhood, with dirt roads, no sewers, no water, no electricity, some users in insecure situations, primary schools, a health center and a police station that does not have the necessary resources to carry out its work, a problem of addiction, the most significant of which is alcohol, a young population with problems of professional integration.
Emmaüs Resistencia operates with few resources. 25 companions carry out the traditional work of collecting, sorting and selling recycled materials (paper, cardboard, scrap metal), enabling them to be self-sufficient. The Community works with municipal solid waste and WEEE.
“We are environmental recyclers, who carry out selective collection. Our economy is based on solid urban waste, on recycling what consumer society throws away, and on meeting excluded people through our social work.”
A brief overview of the many actions carried out by the Community:
Food aid for 30 families, 10 single people and 15 homeless people, and support for soup kitchens.
Education: thanks to the training received on urban solid waste, conferences have been organized to raise public awareness of environmental maintenance and protection.
Health: loan of orthopedic equipment for the disabled (canes, walkers, wheelchairs).
Participation in public libraries to rekindle the habit of reading and create meeting places for families, young people and children.
Program for young people: to collaborate with the institution as a volunteer in rotating tasks, with the aim of contributing to community work and discovering the value of work.
