EMMAUS HASTINGS & ROTHER

Organisation set up in 2007 and member of Emmaus International since 2012.

Emmaus Hastings & Rother is one of the British groups that recently joined Emmaus International (in March 2012 along with Burnley, Colchester, Hampshire and Oxford) and was able to count on the support of Emmaus Brighton & Hove right from the start. In particular, this enabled the group to buy the companions’ accommodation block and work premises. The second-hand store opened its doors in October 2009 and the first companion was welcomed in April 2011, once the community building had been restored. The 15 companions now do traditional Emmaus community work: collecting, sorting, repairing and reselling donated goods at affordable prices. Charlie’s Café is located above the second-hand store and offers customers the chance to round off their visit to the store with a snack. Finally, building work on the new accommodation block – Charlie Jordan House – (named after the group’s first president who passed away in 2009) got underway in late 2013 in the presence of The Duchess of Cornwall..
