Gaza Flotilla: France and Europe must act to protect civilian lives

Emmaus International and numerous organisations, including the CFDT trade union, are joining forces to call for protection for the Global Sumud flotilla.

Emmaus International reiterates its support for the Global Sumud Flotilla, a peaceful citizen initiative that aims to deliver humanitarian aid to Gaza and break the blockade. This action, led by organisations committed to justice and human dignity, cannot be criminalised.

Emmaus International condemns in the strongest possible terms the attacks and harassment by drones targeting the flotilla. These acts constitute a serious violation of maritime law and endanger civilian lives. They are unacceptable and must cease immediately.

France and the European Union cannot remain mere spectators. They have a responsibility to act to guarantee freedom of navigation and the safety of those involved in the flotilla working to open a humanitarian corridor. Emmaus International urges French and European leaders to join the initiative launched by Spain and Italy, who have taken a stand to protect the flotilla in international waters. The European Union must speak with one voice and uphold the principles it professes to champion: respect for the law, protection of civilians and a commitment to peace.
