Emmaus Arezzo was the first Italian community to join Emmaus International, in 1978. It was founded by Franco Bettoli, former chair of Emmaus International (1988-1999), who passed away in 2008.
Today, Emmaus Arezzo is home to 22 companions, who do traditional Emmaus community work: collecting, sorting, repairing and reselling goods at low prices at their second-hand shop and on their stall, which are open on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays.
The group also collects scrap metal in order to recycle it. Furthermore, companions keep a henhouse and 8 beehives, which, as well as bringing in extra income, help to feed the community day-to-day. Finally, Emmaus Arezzo collaborates with local organisations working to rehabilitate people with addictions and to support families with low incomes.
