Background

A Dutch Capuchin monk, Anton Van Dam, and local volunteers founded the Karya Kasih social and medical centre in Medan, a port on the Island of Sumatra, in 1958. They became rag-pickers to fund the centre: ships calling at the port gave them paper and empty bottles. The link with Emmaus was broken after Anton Van Dam’s death. However, on Java, Yayasan Penghibur – an organisation founded by Suprapto Ismudjito and which already had links with Emmaus Helsinki – joined Emmaus International in 1999. The organisation’s centre cares for isolated children and the organisation focuses on protecting the environment (reforestation, organic farming, and collecting rainwater), training small farmers, and health prevention.
