Association de Solidarité et d’Appui METOKAN (ASAM)

ASAM mainly works with vulnerable young people, including workers at markets and garages, orphans and children from poor families.

The young workers benefit from advice and support from a youth worker to set up income-generating activities. Classes are also given to boost their French. A centre for children, with capacity to house 25 people, child trafficking victims and orphans are given support and training in areas such as IT, cookery and hairdressing.

Since 2009 the organisation has also granted microcredit loans to these children's parents or guardians, since it is aware that the support it gives them is only temporary.

That way, the can set up their own income-generating activity to meet their families’ needs. To pay for their activities, Metokan runs a second-hand shop and offers a shoe mending service, runs a bakery and dressmaking workshop, which it also uses to train young people.
